In-Store Reading: Shoes for Me!

Sophie with author, Sue Fliess
Last Saturday, the kids and I visited a wonderful children's book store in Los Altos called Linden Tree Books for Sue Fliess' in-store reading of her new picture book, Shoes for Me! (Marshall Cavendish). This beautifully crafted rhyming story of a little girl hippo who shops for shoes with her mother features colorfully detailed illustrations by Mike Laughead. A great read for all ages. After connecting with a fellow writer at the Golden Gate Conference this year, I recently joined his local critique group in which Sue is one of the members. I had never been to a PB reading at a store, so I was very interested to check it out. The kids totally enjoyed sitting in the Linden Tree's covered courtyard as Sue read her book to young ones and their parents. She also came well prepared with shoe stamps for their hands and custom-baked shoe cookies and hippo cookies. Sophie had one of each and ate them on the spot.

On June 4th, Sue will be reading Shoes for Me! at The Reading Bug in San Carlos, CA at 11am, then again at Books Inc. in Mountain View, CA at 5pm. Find out more at www.suefliess.com.

On a somewhat related note, I recently purchased my first pair of Crocs at a local outlet mall for the bargain bin price of $15. I guess you wouldn't describe me as an "early adopter" of trends. I went with brown. The verdict? Two big toes up.
